In reply to your letter No 26th January last in regard to the question of the exportation of gold from Hongkong to Holland, am directed by Secretary Sir E, Grey to inform you that he can give no assurance at the present time as to whether it will, or will not, be necessary to detain the shipment of gold in question on its arrival in British waters. I am to request
that you will inform Mr. Secretary Bonar Law that action must necessarily be guided in some respect by the information which may be collected in the meantime in regard to the uses for which this gold and the credit derived from it may be destined.
